Some Mobile Web Visitor Stats
dotMobi was a pet project of some major online and mobile companies (like Google, Microsoft and Nokia) dedicated to ensuring the web is optimized for mobile devices. Ram Mohan, Executive VP and CTO of Afilias (the company that now owns dotMobi), describes it this way, “the .MOBI domain, was created to let users know that a site will work on a mobile device, regardless of the device type or network operator.”
Since acquiring dotMobi, Ram has taken a look at some of the data related to the users visiting sites built with dotMobi’s mobile website builder – goMobi (these sites can have any top level domain, not just .MOBI). In a post on CircleID Ram said that most visitors are from the US and using an Apple product. Here’s what else he found:
Top Industries
Restaurants
Retailers
Manufacturing and Production Companies
Healthcare Providers
“Repair” Businesses (which includes real estate agencies)
Top Devices
iPhone
iPad
iPod
HTC Evo 4G
Motorola DroidX & Droid Razr
Samsung Galaxy S2
RIM Blackberry 9800
8520 Curve
Amazon Kindle Fire
Looking at goMobi site data in conjunction with some other mobile web reports, Ram also identified the US, China and Japan as the top consumers of mobile web. The most rapidly growing countries for mobile web are Brazil, India and Vietnam.

To clarify one point in this notes above, the data that Ram Mohan found was not for “.MOBI” sites, but for sites created with the “goMobi” mobile website builder (see http://goMobi.info). Sites built with goMobi can use any top-level domain to identify themselves; goMobi sites, in short, do not require use of the .MOBI domain (but they will work successfully if one chooses to use a .MOBI domain).
Thanks for the clarification Vance, I’ll get that corrected.
